The systems on your car are interconnected. A problem with one can result in damage to others. The check engine light is there to warn you about potential problems so that you can take action ahead of time. Causes include:

  • A loose, missing or faulty gas cap can cause the fuel tank to lose pressure and gasoline vapors to escape
  • Spark plugs or plug wires needing replacement can result in reduced power, the engine knocking or missing, and poor gas mileage as well as damage to the catalytic converter or oxygen sensors
  • A faulty oxygen sensor can throw off your air / fuel mix and cause you to lose power and burn more gas. Eventually, it can cause damage to your spark plugs or catalytic converter
  • A malfunctioning catalytic converter can result in increased pollution, higher engine temperatures and lower gas mileage
  • A damaged or defective mass airflow sensor (MAS) can result in an improper fuel / air mixture. It can ultimately result in damage to the spark plugs, oxygen sensors and catalytic converter.
